For a Sangre Grande watermelon farmer who wants to sell his produce in a Bridgetown or Castries market place, it will soon be as easy as leaving his home to sell his produce in Port of Spain. Under the Caricom Single Market and Economy (CSME), which is intended to remove all barriers to trade and the free movement of people, the same principles apply, according to Jerry Narace, head of the Caricom Single Market and Economy Unit in Port of Spain.

January 1st, 2006 marks the full implementation of the Single Market component of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy in Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. This is a crowning achievement for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and indeed our region has much to celebrate and be proud of.

The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) is the proposed regional judicial tribunal to be established by the Agreement Establishing in the Caribbean Court of Justice. It has a long gestation period commencing in 1970 when the Jamaican delegation at the Sixth Heads of Government Conference, which convened in Jamaica, proposed the establishment of a Caribbean Court of Appeal in substitution for the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.
 
 

 
   
 
The Ministry refers the application to the Committee or the body responsible for approving the skills certificate. The Committee will liaise with either the body responsible for recognizing qualifications e.g. the accreditation Council of T&T or the Ministry with responsibility for the particular field e.g. in case of media workers, the Committee will liaise with the Ministry of Information.
  
 

 
   
 
T&T is moving closer to the realization of the Caricom Single Market and Economy, Ambassador Jerry Narace, head of the CSME Unit, said yesterday. He explained although T&T has been 80 percent CSME-ready from May 2004, since that time they have made even more progress. “Our success to date includes the following: Cabinet’s decision to enact the Treaty into domestic law; the establishment of all the necessary national and regional administrative structures and full implementation of the Common  External Tariff,” Narace said.
  
 

 
   
 
The Caricom Single Market and Economy (CSME) has officially been in the making since 1999. Leaders of the member states and advocates of the CSME agree once implemented, this body would make Community nations and by extension Caribbean citizens better off. While most do not oppose its implementation some highlight the threats it may bring.
